Sondra James

Description
Sondra James was an American actress and sound coordinator known for her extensive work in film, television, and animation, including voice acting in several English-dubbed anime productions. Born on July 21, 1939, in New York City, she built a prolific career that spanned several decades until her death on September 12, 2021.

Her career was deeply rooted in the New York City entertainment industry. Beyond her on-screen roles, James was a highly respected figure in post-production, particularly in the field of automated dialogue replacement (ADR). She founded the post-production looping group Speakeasy, which provided casting, coordination, and performance for numerous high-profile films and television series. This work included contributions to films like True Grit, The Reader, The Devil Wears Prada, and The Sixth Sense, as well as series such as Sex and the City, Boardwalk Empire, and Damages. Her expertise in ADR and voice casting made her a significant behind-the-scenes contributor to the entertainment industry for many years.

In the realm of anime, James provided voices for several English-dubbed releases. She is noted for her role as BSX-03 Mega Driver in the original video animation (OVA) series Battle Skipper, a part that was uncredited. Her other uncredited anime voice roles include performances as Sara and Child Walla in Iria: Zeiram the Animation, multiple characters in My My Mai, and Granny in Gokudou-kun Manyuuki. She also had a credited role as Nanny in an episode of the long-running series Pokémon Advance. Additionally, she contributed her voice to the English versions of the Kikoriki films, playing the character Olga in Kikoriki: Legend of the Golden Dragon and Kikoriki: Deja Vu.

Her work extended beyond traditional acting to include voice casting for English-dubbed anime. She served as the casting director for the English version of the OVA series The Heroic Legend of Arslan.

James's achievements are defined by her versatility and her dual role as both a performer and a key figure in post-production. Her voice and casting work can be heard in a vast array of acclaimed live-action films, such as Joker, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and The Dictator, where she also made on-screen appearances. Her long-standing contribution to looping and ADR, particularly through her company Speakeasy, solidified her reputation as a foundational, if often unheralded, figure in modern film and television production.
