Shin Kouduki
Description
Shin Kouduki is a Japanese creator known primarily as the author of light novel series. Kouduki began publishing web novels on the user-generated site Shōsetsuka ni Narō, a common starting point for many light novelists. The first known web novel series, which would later become The Banished Former Hero Lives as He Pleases, was published on the platform from January 2018 to June 2019.
This series was subsequently acquired by the publisher TO Books, marking Kouduki’s professional debut in print. The light novel is published under the TO Bunko imprint, with illustrations by Chocoan. The first volume was released in October 2018, and as of mid-2024, seven volumes have been published in Japan. An English language version of the light novel is licensed by J-Novel Club.
Kouduki is also credited as the original creator behind I Surrendered My Sword for a New Life as a Mage, another light novel series published by TO Books. This series was licensed in English by Sol Press. Beyond these light novel series, Kouduki is credited as the original author for the manga series Elf-san wa Yaserarenai. The manga was published in Japan starting in 2016, with a sequel series, Shin Elf-san wa Yaserarenai, following in 2023. This indicates a body of work that spans multiple years and publishers.
The most prominent work associated with the creator is The Banished Former Hero Lives as He Pleases. Originating as a web novel, it was developed into a print light novel series, which then spawned multiple adaptations. A manga adaptation illustrated by Karasumaru began serialization in December 2018 on the Comic Corona manga service, with its chapters collected into tankōbon volumes by TO Books. An anime television series adaptation, produced by the animation studios Studio Deen and Marvy Jack, aired from April to June 2024. The series was directed by Kazuomi Koga and featured a cast that included Shouta Aoi in the lead role. This adaptation brought the creator’s work to a broader international audience through streaming platforms.
In terms of artistic identity, the creator’s works frequently operate within the fantasy and isekai (another world) genres, a popular category in Japanese media where a character is reincarnated or transported to a different world. The Banished Former Hero Lives as He Pleases exemplifies this, centering on a protagonist who retains the memories and powers of a past life as a hero after being reincarnated, only to be banished by his new family. Similarly, I Surrendered My Sword for a New Life as a Mage follows a protagonist who is reincarnated from a powerful swordsman and seeks a new life focused on magic. A recurring theme in these narratives is the protagonist’s desire for a peaceful, self-directed life, which is consistently interrupted by their own sense of duty or the demands of the world around them.
