Masahito Soda

Description
Masahito Soda is a Japanese manga artist born on June 18, 1968, in Tokyo’s Bunkyō district. He studied at Nihon University but left before graduating. Soda began his career in the manga industry as an assistant to Taku Kitazaki and made his professional debut in 1990 with the short work Get Rock, published in Kodansha’s Magazine Special.

Soda is best known as the creator of the firefighting drama Megumi no Daigo, known in English as Firefighter! Daigo of Fire Company M. This series, which follows the intense training and heroic actions of young firefighter Daigo Asahina, was serialized in Shogakukan’s Weekly Shōnen Sunday from September 1995 to June 1999 and compiled into 20 tankōbon volumes. It became a significant success, earning Soda the 42nd Shogakukan Manga Award for shōnen in 1997. The original manga inspired a 1999 anime film produced by Sunrise, as well as a live-action television drama that aired on Fuji TV in 2004.

In October 2020, Soda launched a direct sequel to his original work, titled Megumi no Daigo: Kyūkoku no Orange, also known as Firefighter Daigo: Rescuer in Orange. This new series shifts the focus to a new generation of rescuers, including a second protagonist named Daigo Toake. Serialized in Kodansha’s Monthly Shōnen Magazine, the sequel was adapted into a 23-episode anime television series produced by Brain’s Base, which aired from September 2023 to March 2024.

Beyond his firefighter narratives, Soda has created several other notable manga across different fields of human endeavor. His earlier work Shakariki! focused on bicycle racing and was published in Akita Shoten’s Weekly Shōnen Champion from 1992 to 1995. He explored the world of ballet with Subaru, serialized in Shogakukan’s Big Comic Spirits from 2000 to 2002, later continuing the story with Moon: Subaru Solitude Standing from 2007 to 2011. His series Capeta, which follows a young boy’s journey into motorsports and kart racing, ran in Kodansha’s Monthly Shōnen Magazine from 2003 to 2013 and earned him the Kodansha Manga Award in 2005. Later works include The Tenth Prism, serialized from 2014 to 2017, and Change!, published from 2017 to 2019.

Soda’s artistic identity is defined by a consistent focus on young, dedicated protagonists striving for excellence in high-stakes, often physically demanding professions. His stories frequently explore themes of intense personal drive, rivalry, and mastery within specialized fields such as firefighting, ballet, cycling, and auto racing. With major award wins from both Shogakukan and Kodansha, Masahito Soda holds a respected place in the manga industry, recognized for his ability to create compelling long-running series that combine technical authenticity with dramatic human storytelling. His return to the firefighter genre with Kyūkoku no Orange has introduced his work to a new generation of audiences through its recent anime adaptation.
