Kuro Tomiyama

Description
Kuro Tomiyama is a Japanese manga artist best known as the illustrator for the series Megumi no Daigo: Kyuukoku no Orange, also known as Firefighter Daigo: Rescuer in Orange. This work represents his most significant contribution to the anime and manga industry, particularly within the action and drama genres.

Tomiyama’s role is that of a manga illustrator, collaborating with writer and original creator Masahito Soda. Together, they began serializing Megumi no Daigo: Kyuukoku no Orange in Kodansha’s Monthly Shonen Magazine in October 2020. The manga is a direct sequel to Soda’s earlier hit series, Megumi no Daigo (Firefighter! Daigo of Fire Company M), which was published in Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday from 1995 to 1999. While Soda is credited with the original story, Tomiyama is consistently cited as the artist responsible for the sequel’s visual presentation.

The sequel series follows a new generation of firefighters—Daigo Toake, Shun Onoda, and Yuki Nakamura—as they strive to join an elite rescue corps known as "Orange." The story focuses on their personal growth, professional challenges, and the collective crisis that threatens all of Japan. Thematically, the work continues the original’s focus on heroism, public service, and the intense pressure of life-saving professions. As of August 2025, the manga had released twelve tankoubon volumes. In 2023, the series was nominated for the Best Shonen Manga award at the 47th Kodansha Manga Awards, signaling its industry recognition.

The artistic identity of Kuro Tomiyama is closely tied to the modern revival of Soda’s franchise. The manga received a television anime adaptation produced by the studio Brain’s Base, which premiered in September 2023 and ran for 23 episodes. The anime was directed by Masahiko Murata and streamed internationally on Crunchyroll under the title Firefighter Daigo: Rescuer in Orange. This adaptation brought Tomiyama’s character designs and action sequences to a wider audience, further cementing the sequel as a distinct entry in the disaster-rescue genre.

Tomiyama’s industry significance stems from this collaborative revitalization of a classic 1990s property. By providing the artwork for a sequel to a beloved series, Tomiyama has helped introduce the firefighter drama to a new generation of fans. The partnership also exemplifies a common manga production model where a writer and an artist collaborate to produce a long-running serialized work. In November 2025, the manga was placed on an indefinite hiatus, marking a pause in the ongoing story that Tomiyama and Soda have been developing since 2020. Beyond this primary work, no widely documented independent creations or other major series from Tomiyama are available in public records.
