Hitsuji Gondaira

Description
Hitsuji Gondaira is a Japanese manga creator born on September 29, 1992, in Hokkaido Prefecture. Initially, Gondaira’s career path was oriented toward marine science; he enrolled in the Faculty of Fisheries Sciences at Hokkaido University, driven by a childhood fascination with sea life and deep-sea creatures. It was during his first year of university that he began submitting works to manga competitions. At the age of 19, his submission IBIS received an honorable mention in the 43rd Jump Treasure Newcomer Manga Award, a pivotal moment that encouraged him to pursue a career as a mangaka while completing his studies.

Gondaira’s early career involved publishing several one-shot chapters. These included Chaco’s Jailbreak Theory in the summer 2011 issue of Shonen Jump NEXT! and Mechanical Father in the spring 2012 issue of the same publication. In 2013, the one-shot Kokkuriya Ai! was published in Weekly Shonen Jump. His one-shot Mythical Creature Doctor Toteku was published in Weekly Shonen Jump in 2015, where it won the 10th Golden Future Cup, an award that typically grants the creator the right to serialize a winning work.

Following his university graduation, Gondaira began his first serialized manga, Demon Prince Poro’s Diaries, which ran in Weekly Shonen Jump from February to June 2017 before concluding after two compiled volumes. His second serialized work, Mission: Yozakura Family, launched in Weekly Shonen Jump on August 26, 2019. This series became his breakout success, combining elements of spy action, comedy, and family drama. The story follows Taiyo Asano, a high school student who marries into the Yozakura family, a household of powerful spies, to protect his childhood friend Mutsumi. The manga concluded its run on January 20, 2025, after approximately five and a half years, with its chapters collected into 29 tankōbon volumes. The series achieved significant commercial success, with over three million copies in circulation.

The popularity of Mission: Yozakura Family led to a television anime adaptation produced by the studio Silver Link. The first season aired from April to October 2024, and a second season has been announced for a 2026 premiere. Gondaira is credited as the original creator and character designer for the anime.

Gondaira’s artistic identity is often tied to his background in fisheries science, which occasionally influences his work. In his public-facing avatar, he uses a drawing of a fox in sheep’s clothing, a visual pun on his pen name, which includes the Japanese word for sheep. His career trajectory demonstrates a steady progression from one-shot competition entries to serialized works, ultimately achieving mainstream success with an anime adaptation and a multi-year run in one of Japan’s most prominent weekly manga magazines.
