Katsuhisa Minami
Description
Katsuhisa Minami is a Japanese manga artist, born on May 30, 1971, in Kishiwada, Osaka Prefecture. After graduating from junior high school, he worked a series of jobs including as a pipefitter and in a woodworking factory. His early life also included experience as a member of a bosozoku, a Japanese motorcycle gang, an experience that would later inform his creative work.
Minami made his debut as a manga creator in 1999 when he won second prize in the 41st Chiba Tetsuya Awards for his entry, Naniwa Tomoare. The following year, in 2000, he began serializing Naniwa Tomoare in Kodansha's Weekly Young Magazine, a seinen manga publication. This street-racing series became his first major work, running for several years and spanning a total of 31 volumes across its original run and its續作, the similarly titled Naniwa Tomoare (published from 2007 to 2014).
Minami is best known as the creator of The Fable, a black comedy crime manga that began serialization in Weekly Young Magazine in November 2014. The series follows a legendary and highly skilled assassin known only as "Fable," who is ordered by his boss to live an ordinary, non-violent life in Osaka for one year. The Fable was a critical and commercial success, concluding its initial run in November 2019 with its chapters collected into 22 volumes. By June 2024, the manga had over 25 million copies in circulation worldwide, making it one of the best-selling manga series of all time. In 2017, the series won the prestigious 41st Kodansha Manga Award in the General category.
The success of The Fable led to multiple adaptations. Two live-action films were produced, with the first premiering in Japan in June 2019 and a sequel, The Fable: A Hitman Who Doesn't Kill, following in June 2021. An anime television series adaptation, produced by the animation studio Tezuka Productions, aired for 25 episodes from April to September 2024. Minami has continued to expand the story with sequel manga series. The Fable: The Second Contact was serialized in Weekly Young Magazine from July 2021 to July 2023 and collected into nine volumes. A third series, titled The Fable: The Third Secret, began publication in March 2025.
Across his body of work, recurring themes in Minami's art include a deep dive into Japanese subcultures, specifically the world of street racers and the criminal underworld, often portrayed with a blend of intense action and dark humor. His work is noted for its detailed and grounded depiction of these milieus, which is often attributed to his personal experiences as a former bosozoku member and his extensive research. Katsuhisa Minami's career, from his debut with Naniwa Tomoare to the international success of The Fable, marks him as a significant figure in the world of seinen manga, known for creating compelling stories about unconventional characters living on the fringes of society.
