Shūzō Oshimi

Description
Shūzō Oshimi is a Japanese manga artist born on March 19, 1981, in Kiryu, Gunma Prefecture. He is primarily known for creating and illustrating manga series that are often adapted into other media, including the anime television series adaptation of his work Flowers of Evil.

Oshimi began his professional career after being recognized with the Tetsuya Chiba Award for his one-shot Dream Flower Garden in the early 2000s. He made his official debut in 2002 with Midnight Paranoia Star. His first serialized work, Avant-Garde Yumeko, started publication in 2003 through Kodansha, the publisher with which he is most closely associated. He has stated that he draws inspiration from his own adolescence, and his hometown of Kiryu later served as the primary setting for his acclaimed series Flowers of Evil.

Several of Oshimi's manga have been adapted for different mediums. The Flowers of Evil was adapted into an anime series in 2013. His works Drifting Net Cafe and Inside Mari have been produced as live-action television dramas, while Sweet Poolside was adapted into a live-action film. In January 2023, his series Blood on the Tracks received the Fauve série award at the Angoulême International Comics Festival.

Oshimi is recognized for a distinct artistic identity focused on psychological tension and the darker aspects of human nature. His narratives often center on adolescence, personal perversion, and social alienation, frequently featuring protagonists who find themselves in uncomfortable or transgressive situations. His storytelling relies heavily on visual expression with sparse dialogue, a technique that amplifies the sense of dread and introspection in his work. He has spoken about experiencing a stutter, a theme that appears in several of his stories. His notable original manga works include Flowers of Evil, Drifting Net Cafe, Inside Mari, Happiness, and Blood on the Tracks.
