Satoru Nii

Description
Satoru Nii is a Japanese manga artist best known as the creator of the popular series Wind Breaker. Nii began their professional career with the manga Danshi Badminton-bu ni Joshi ga Magireteru: Secret Badminton Club, a sports comedy series that was serialized in Manga Box from January 2016 to August 2017 and later compiled into five volumes. Before this serialization, Nii had an early interest in manga, having grown up reading series such as Rave, Samurai Deeper Kyo, and Fullmetal Alchemist, the latter of which Nii has cited as a notable influence. During their school years, Nii was an active badminton player, a personal experience that informed the theme of their first serialized work.

Nii achieved widespread recognition with the creation of Wind Breaker, which began serialization on Kodansha’s Magazine Pocket website on January 13, 2021. Nii serves as both the writer and illustrator for the series. The manga follows Haruka Sakura, a lone fighter who enrolls at Furin High School, an institution known for its delinquent students, only to discover that its student body, the Bofurin, are dedicated to protecting their town. The creation of the series was driven by Nii’s desire to draw compelling male characters. Initially, the character Hajime Umemiya was considered for the protagonist role, but Nii ultimately shifted focus to Haruka Sakura, a character conceived with the image of a stray cat who gradually becomes more accustomed to human connection. Nii has noted that the series was approached with a sensibility similar to a sports manga, with fights serving as a form of communication rather than mere violence.

The success of Wind Breaker has led to significant expansion across other media. The manga received an anime television series adaptation produced by CloverWorks, with the first season airing from April to June 2024 and a second season following from April to June 2025. A live-action film adaptation was also released in Japan in December 2025. Additionally, the franchise has expanded to include stage plays and a video game.

Nii’s artistic identity is characterized by a focus on character design and visual harmony, using fashion and distinctive accessories as tools to convey each character’s personality and role within the story. Thematically, their work often explores themes of connection, vulnerability, and the idea of strength as a means of protecting others, moving beyond the stereotypical portrayal of delinquents to focus on the emotional depth and camaraderie of the characters. Despite the immense success of Wind Breaker, which has sold millions of copies, Nii maintains a private personal life. Their date of birth is not public, they have not revealed their face, and they have stated a philosophy of concentrating on daily creative work rather than external pressures like sales figures or success.
