Fusanosuke Inariya

Description
Fusanosuke Inariya is a Japanese manga artist recognized for creating the series Maiden Rose, which was adapted into an original video animation. Inariya is known for detailed artwork and narratives often set against military backdrops.

Inariya was born on March 12 in Setouchi, Okayama Prefecture, and is a female creator. Before becoming a manga artist, she graduated from law school but changed career paths after the law firm that had offered her a position was destroyed in the 1995 Kobe earthquake. She made her professional debut in 1996 in the shojo magazine LC Mystery using the pen name Tomoyodo Kujou. She reserves the name Fusanosuke Inariya for her boys-love works, continuing to use Tomoyodo Kujou for other genres.

Her most prominent work is Maiden Rose, known in Japanese as Hyakujitsu no Bara. The manga began serialization in 2004 and follows the relationship between two soldiers, Taki Reizen and Klaus von Wolfstadt, who are bound by an oath of fealty amidst a world war. The series was published by Oakla Publishing and has been licensed in English by Digital Manga Publishing. In 2009, Maiden Rose was adapted into a two-episode original video animation produced by the studio Prime Time, with Inariya credited as the original creator.

In addition to Maiden Rose, Inariya has created numerous other works, often exploring similar themes. These include the one-shot Giglio, about a soldier and a priest during World War II; Hari no Hana, a historical fantasy featuring the monk Ashiya Douman; and the collection Zion no Koeda, which contains stories like Netsu no Ori set in World War II. She also produced the series Rakuen no Izumi, one of her first boys-love publications, in 2003. Beyond her commercially published manga, Inariya is active in the doujinshi (self-published) scene and is a member of the circles DECOPONS and Akai Neko Nyo Dan, sometimes using the name Kohaku Sabou.

Her artistic identity is characterized by a focus on military history and wartime settings, which are a consistent theme across her body of work. Her stories frequently depict complex, intense, and often tragic romantic relationships between men, dealing with themes of power, duty, and violence. Her artwork is noted for its intricate detail and a stylistic contrast between serious, realistic character designs and the use of adorable chibi (super-deformed) forms for comedic effect in supplementary material. Inariya has stated a personal preference for drawing characters who are older men, a trait sometimes referred to as ojikon. She has also expressed that she finds sex scenes in manga interesting because they reveal a character's true self. She reportedly does not use models for her human figures and has been rumored to have once assisted Hiromu Arakawa, the creator of Fullmetal Alchemist.

Inariya’s significance in the industry is tied to her distinctive storytelling style within the boys-love genre. Her work Maiden Rose is one of her most recognized titles, and her handling of mature themes and historical settings has garnered a dedicated readership. In 2011, she was a guest of honor at Yaoi-Con, an American convention for fans of boys-love media. After a period of hiatus, she regained the rights to Maiden Rose in 2018, and publication of the series resumed under a new publisher, Taiyoh Tosho.
