Kakeru Utsugi

Description
Kakeru Utsugi is a Japanese manga artist best known as the creator of the series How to keep a mummy, which began as a manga before being adapted into an anime television series. The manga, titled Miira no Kaikata in Japanese, started its serialization in 2014 on the Comico Japan digital platform. The series is published in print by Futabasha, which has released multiple tankōbon volumes since February 2016. The story, which follows a high school boy who receives a tiny mummy from his adventurer father, blends comedy with gentle, heartwarming slice-of-life storytelling, a genre sometimes referred to as iyashikei.

Before beginning the series, Utsugi had initially proposed a story with a more serious tone to an editor, but was encouraged to create something gentle and cute instead. This direction became the foundation for the series, establishing a style that focuses on the healing and humorous aspects of caring for small, supernatural creatures.

The anime adaptation of How to keep a mummy was produced by the studio Eight Bit and aired for 12 episodes from January to March 2018. For this adaptation, Utsugi is credited as the original creator, with the series composition handled by Deko Akao and direction by Kaori. The success of the manga and its subsequent anime adaptation established Kakeru Utsugi as a creator associated with the heartwarming comedy genre, particularly known for stories that involve the bonding between humans and adorable mythical beings.
