Meme Iwaoka
Description
Meme Iwaoka, also known by the Japanese name いわおかめめ, is a Japanese manga artist and illustrator born on September 17, 1975, in Hokkaido Prefecture. Her early work was published under the name Iwaoka Meme (岩岡目々), and she began her career by submitting manga to Choco Banana, an illustration magazine edited by Akira Sakuma. Her first collected volume, Waru Waarudo, was published in 1998, compiling work from that period.
Iwaoka made her debut as a manga artist for the shojo magazine Ciao (published by Shogakukan) in 2001 with the one-shot Yumemiru Melody, featured in the summer issue of Ciao Deluxe. Because her drawing style made female characters, particularly protagonists, appear very young, she later moved to work primarily as an illustrator for the grade-level magazines Shougaku Ichinensei and Youchien, both also from Shogakukan. During this time, she created Kurukuru Rinne, a接力 manga that attracted attention from readers beyond the magazines' target audience. She continued to publish one-shots in Ciao Deluxe and, starting in 2006, began serializing works in the main Ciao magazine, becoming a regular member of its roster of creators. She is noted as one of the few artists, alongside Yabuchi Yuu and Nishimura Tomoko, who successfully returned to serialization in Ciao after moving to grade-level magazines.
Iwaoka is the original creator behind the anime Elite Jack!!, a six-episode OVA series released between 2014 and 2015, for which she is credited with the original work. Her artistic identity is characterized by a style that is somewhat influenced by少年 manga, and her career includes a significant period focused on illustration work for young children's publications. Within the industry, her career path illustrates a notable trajectory of moving between different demographics of Shogakukan's magazines, from Ciao to educational titles and back, establishing her place within the broader landscape of Japanese少女漫画 creators.
