tosh

Description
Tosh is the former pen name of the Japanese manga artist Shun Saeki. Active since the mid-2000s, the creator initially used the tosh pseudonym for work in adult manga magazines and the doujin (self-published) circuit, becoming known for a style that emphasized detailed and expressive character artwork.

Under the tosh name, the artist produced several notable original works in the adult genre. Among these are Harem Time, serialized from 2008 to 2011, and Menkui!, which ran from 2008 to 2010. Both titles were later released as compiled tankobon volumes and received anime adaptations, specifically Harem Time The Animation and Menkui! The Animation, establishing the creator’s reputation in that field during the late 2000s and early 2010s.

The creator’s career took a significant turn in 2012, marking a transition from adult-oriented works to mainstream shonen manga. The final work credited to the tosh name appeared in June of that year. Subsequently, the artist adopted the real name Shun Saeki for all future publications and began collaborating with writer Yuto Tsukuda. Their first major project was the long-running series Food Wars!: Shokugeki no Soma, which was serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump from 2012 to 2019. This series became a global success, with its blend of culinary themes and the artist’s signature expressive, high-impact visual style, which carried over from earlier work.

A consistent thread in the artist’s body of work is a strong focus on character design and anatomy. Early recognition for technical skill in figure drawing, developed during the years as tosh, became a defining feature of the later mainstream work. The artistic identity is marked by the ability to depict a wide range of characters with a distinct sense of dynamism and visual flair, a trait that has been noted as a significant factor in the commercial success of projects like Food Wars!.

The transition from a successful career in adult manga to a prominent position in one of the largest weekly少年漫画 (shonen manga) magazines is a defining aspect of the creator’s industry significance. This shift is frequently cited as a notable example of a creator successfully bridging the two fields, utilizing skills developed in one area to achieve widespread recognition in another. Following the conclusion of Food Wars! in 2019, the artist has continued to work in the industry, contributing illustrations and collaborating on new projects under the name Shun Saeki.
