Izuru Yumizuru

Description
Izuru Yumizuru is a Japanese screenwriter and light novel author, born on January 17, 1982. His career began in the visual novel industry, where he worked for approximately five years as a scenario writer under the pen name Hachiman for the software company Alice Soft. He contributed to titles including Tsumamigui 2, Shimaima, and Yokubari Saboten. He departed from the company in July 2007.

Yumizuru made his debut as a light novel author in 2008. His major breakthrough came with the series Infinite Stratos, which began serialization in 2009 under Media Factory’s MF Bunko J imprint. The series became a significant success, forming the foundation of his career. It is a science fiction romantic comedy centered on a world where powered exoskeletal weapons known as Infinite Stratos can only be operated by women, except for a single male protagonist, Ichika Orimura.

The Infinite Stratos franchise has seen extensive adaptation. It was first adapted into a twelve-episode anime television series that aired from January to March 2011, produced by studio Eight Bit. The original video animation titled IS <Infinite Stratos> Encore: A Sextet Yearning for Love was released on December 7, 2011, with Yumizuru credited as the original creator. A second anime season, Infinite Stratos 2, followed in late 2013, for which Yumizuru was credited with the original work and writing composition for several episodes and OVAs. Multiple manga adaptations have also been published, illustrated by artists such as Kenji Akahoshi and Homura Yuuki.

After a period of publishing complications, the light novel series moved from Media Factory to the newly established Overlap Bunko imprint in 2013. This allowed for the continued publication of the series, with new editions of previous volumes and subsequent installments. The series was placed on indefinite hiatus after the twelfth volume. Beyond Infinite Stratos, Yumizuru authored another light novel series titled After School Battlefield, released by Kodansha in 2012.

Yumizuru’s work is often associated with the mecha and school romantic comedy genres. His artistic identity, developed through his background in scenario writing, focuses on character-driven narratives within high-concept science fiction settings. His career has been publicly marked by periods of inconsistency in publication and personal health challenges, making his trajectory a notable subject within the light novel industry. He remains primarily known as the creator of Infinite Stratos, a title that achieved significant commercial success in both novel and animated formats.
