Mihona Fujii

Description
Mihona Fujii is a Japanese manga artist born on November 12, 1974, in Tokyo, Japan, known for her work in the shōjo (girls' manga) genre. She made her professional debut in 1990 with the one-shot story Mujaki na mama de, which was published in the autumn issue of Ribon Original magazine. This debut marked the beginning of a long association with Shueisha, one of Japan's major publishing houses, and its leading shōjo manga magazine, Ribon.

Fujii rose to prominence as the creator of the popular series Gals!, which was serialized in Ribon magazine from 1998 to 2002. The story centers on Ran Kotobuki, a spirited high school girl who is deeply passionate about the latest fashion trends and the gyaru (gal) subculture of Shibuya, while also aspiring to be a police officer like her brother. The series explores themes of friendship, justice, and self-expression, blending comedy with moments of heartfelt drama. Gals! became Fujii's most recognized and successful work, and it was adapted into a 52-episode anime television series produced by Studio Pierrot. The anime aired on TV Tokyo from April 2001 to March 2002 under the title Super GALS! Kotobuki Ran. The English-language adaptation of the anime was licensed by ADV Films for North America.

Beyond her signature series, Fujii has created a number of other manga titles. Before Gals!, her earlier works published by Shueisha under the Ribon Mascot Comics imprint include Start! (1992), Spicy Girl (1994), the five-volume series Passion Girls (1994-1996), the three-volume fantasy series Ryuō Mahōjin (1996-1997), Yuki no Hanabira (1998), Himitsu no Hanazono (1998), and Super Princess (1999). Following a period of relative quiet, she published a new series titled Tokyo Angels in the magazine Margaret in 2006, which was collected in three volumes. After another hiatus, Fujii returned to her most famous creation in 2019. She revived the Gals! franchise with a direct continuation titled Gals!!, which was serialized on Shueisha's MangaMee app from 2019 to 2022. In 2020, she also ventured into a new genre with Mihona Fujii's I♡TAKARAZUKA!!!, a series focused on the all-female Takarazuka Revue musical theater troupe, which was published in Kodansha's Monthly Afternoon magazine.

Fujii's artistic identity is strongly tied to the vibrant and dynamic visual style characteristic of Ribon magazine in the 1990s. Her artwork features large, expressive eyes and a clean, energetic linework that captures the fashion-forward world of her characters, particularly their detailed hairstyles and outfits. Her storytelling frequently focuses on strong-willed, fashionable heroines and their friendships, often set against the backdrop of urban youth culture. The significance of her work, especially Gals!, lies in its popularization of the gyaru subculture within manga and anime, and its enduring appeal led to a revival sequel nearly two decades after the original series concluded.
