Jyanome

Description
Jyanome is a Japanese manga artist known for creating the Boys Love series Twilight Out of Focus, which was adapted into an anime television series in 2024. Jyanome is recognized for works that explore romantic relationships between male characters, often set against the backdrop of school club activities. Jyanome was born on September 12th, though the year of birth has not been publicly disclosed. The pen name Jyanome was derived from a line in the traditional Japanese children's song Amefuri, which mentions a traditional oil-paper umbrella with a bullseye pattern known as a Jyanome umbrella.

Jyanome began drawing manga as a hobby during school years, initially creating works for the semiannual Comiket convention. The artist did not originally aspire to become a professional manga artist. However, with the rise of personal manga websites, Jyanome began publishing work online almost daily, amassing over one hundred pages. This online presence led to discovery by the publisher Fusion Product, which facilitated a professional debut. The first commercially published manga by Jyanome was Waraibanashi no Yō da in 2012. Subsequent early works include Kirai no Koibito, Colorful na Kimi to Monokuro na Boku, and Magarikado ni, Inu, published between 2013 and 2016.

The most significant work in Jyanome's bibliography is Twilight Out of Focus, a manga series set in a high school film club. The original manga was first published by Kodansha in 2019, with the first compiled volume released on June 14, 2019. The series has since expanded into a franchise with multiple sequel and spin-off volumes, including Afterimage Slow Motion in 2020, Twilight Out of Focus Overlap in 2020, Midnight Monologue in 2021, and Twilight Out of Focus Long Take beginning in 2023. The Twilight Out of Focus franchise is published in English by Kodansha USA and has been released in additional languages including German by Manga Cult and Traditional Chinese by Tong Li Publishing. In 2024, the manga was adapted into a twelve-episode anime television series produced by Studio DEEN and directed by Toshinori Watabe, which aired from July 4 to September 20, 2024.

Jyanome has identified multiple artistic influences, including manga artists Yumi Tada and Hirohiko Araki, as well as Kaori Tsurutani. The artist also cites German film director Wim Wenders as a favorite filmmaker, an interest reflected in the film club setting of Twilight Out of Focus. Jyanome has stated that personal experiences from school days, including time spent as a member of a kendo club and living in a boarding house, have informed the depiction of relationships and daily life in the manga. When creating characters, Jyanome has explained that the protagonists are developed from within rather than based on specific real-life models, though minor characters may occasionally be inspired by real people. The artist has noted that composition and camera angles are particularly important when illustrating intimate scenes, aiming to convey passion while adhering to publisher guidelines.

Beyond the Twilight Out of Focus franchise, Jyanome has authored numerous other Boys Love manga, including Orokamono no Ai no Uta, Otona sugiru My Lover, Michimichi Naru Mama ni, Otogibanashi wa Awa to Kie, and Yokoshima no Yuen. Jyanome has also contributed illustrations to light novels including岩本薫's Nakameguro River Edge House and contributed to the anthology Comic Tōken Ranbu -ONLINE- Shinken Danshi Shimpūroku. Jyanome is considered a notable creator within the Boys Love genre, with Twilight Out of Focus representing a commercially successful series that has reached international audiences through multiple language editions and an anime adaptation.
