Yūshi Kawata
Description
Yūshi Kawata is a Japanese manga writer best known for creating comedic and parody works based on established franchises. His most recognized credit is as the writer of the manga Fist of the North Star: Strawberry Flavor, a parody of the iconic post-apocalyptic series Fist of the North Star.
Kawata often works in close collaboration with the artist Yukito. In this partnership, Kawata is responsible for the story and produces detailed storyboards that function as manga drafts, complete with panel layouts and simple drawings, which Yukito then uses to create the final artwork. Kawata also takes on a directorial role, instructing the art team on backgrounds and making corrections to drawings. The two creators have worked together for many years, beginning with their debut.
Before their work on Fist of the North Star, Kawata and Yukito serialized an original work in the magazine Young Ace. Their most significant collaboration came when their editor suggested they create a spin-off following the conclusion of that series. Inspired by their shared fandom of Comic BomBom magazine and their enjoyment of classic video games, they decided to develop manga based on the Mega Man series from Capcom. This led to the creation of two concurrent serializations, Rockman-san and Rockman-chan, for which Kawata provides the story and Yukito the art. In an interview, Kawata described the two series as complementary, allowing him to explore different comedic ideas he could not fit into a single work. Kawata has also been credited for the Mr. Mega Man manga.
Fist of the North Star: Strawberry Flavor began publication on Tokuma Shoten's Web Comic Zenyon website in 2013. The series reimagines the series' villains, particularly Holy Emperor Thouzer, as lighthearted and fun-loving characters who seek friendship with the protagonist Kenshiro. The manga was a commercial success, with over one million copies in print by June 2015. This success led to an anime television series adaptation produced by studio Ajiado, which aired twelve episodes on TV Tokyo from October to December 2015.
