ANGYAMAN
Description
Angyaman is a Japanese manga artist from Osaka Prefecture who began their creative career under the pen name Sakouzou, initially sharing illustrations and manga on a personal blog and website around 2007. Their early work included the travelogue manga series Real Ensoku, one volume of which was published under the Sakouzou name. After changing their pen name to Angyaman around 2011, the artist experienced a period of financial difficulty, leading to a brief departure from full-time creative work before returning with the goal of making a living through manga. The professional commercial debut came in 2017 with the one-shot Oni no Kage for Shonen Jump+, followed by another one-shot in 2018. The first serialized work, Yoru wo Higashi ni, was published in 2019 but concluded after two volumes due to low sales. Following the cancellation of subsequent serialization proposals, Angyaman turned to the Jump Rookie website, a platform where a work achieving the highest monthly page views could earn the right to an indie serialization on Shonen Jump+. The submission of Ramen Akaneko in November 2021 garnered approximately 500,000 page views and secured first place, winning the serialization opportunity. The series began as an indie serialization on Shonen Jump+ in March 2022, and following its popularity, was promoted to an official serialization on the platform in October 2022.
The best-known original work is Ramen Akaneko, also published in English as Red Cat Ramen. The series follows Tamako, a woman who applies for a job at a ramen shop only to discover it is run entirely by talking cats; rather than serving noodles, she becomes the shop’s dedicated cat caretaker. The manga is published in print by Shueisha under its Jump Comics imprint, with the first volume released in April 2022. The series has been published digitally in English through the MANGA Plus service. A twelve-episode anime television adaptation premiered in July 2024, produced by animation studio E&H production with direction by Hisatoshi Shimizu. The second season of the anime was announced in December 2024. Angyaman also made a cameo appearance in an episode of the anime adaptation.
Angyaman’s artistic identity is informed by a path that moved from independent web publishing to mainstream serialization after overcoming early commercial setbacks. The creator’s background in documenting personal journeys through Real Ensoku reflects an approach grounded in observation and character-focused storytelling. In February 2026, Angyaman was named a special judge for the Shonen Jump+ One Scene Manga Award, a contest focused on one-shot stories set in a single unchanging location, noting in commentary that such constraints highlight inventive character relationships and scenarios. This recognition places the creator in a role that influences emerging talent within the same digital platform that provided the breakthrough for Ramen Akaneko.
