Oshioshio

Description
oshioshio is a Japanese manga artist and illustrator known for a body of work that spans original manga series, character design for virtual YouTubers, and illustrations for light novels. Originally from Kanagawa Prefecture, oshioshio pursued design studies at an art university with the initial goal of working in advertising. However, after about a year in a conventional office job at an advertising company, she left to pursue a career in illustration, setting a one-year deadline for herself to succeed. Her path to professional work began with the creation of dojinshi, or self-published works, an activity she had engaged in since junior high school. This experience led to an invitation from an editor at Houbunsha, allowing her to make her commercial debut as a manga artist with the four-panel series Kamisama to Quintet, which began serialization in 2014. Around the same time, she also started another serialized manga, Sakura Maimai.

Her career expanded beyond manga into illustration, with her first light novel illustration project being Hime-sama, Sekai Horobu kara Gohan Tabete Ikimasuyo! in 2016. She has also contributed illustrations to numerous other light novel series and anthologies. In the field of character design, oshioshio is recognized for creating the visual identities of virtual YouTubers, most notably Amane Kanata for Hololive Production and Soraboshi Kirame for Nijisanji. Her design philosophy for VTubers considers the medium's focus on upper-body shots in streams and the importance of creating designs that are memorable yet easy for fans to draw in their own artwork.

oshioshio is the creator of the manga series My Deer Friend Nokotan (Japanese title: Shikanoko Nokonoko Koshitantan), which began serialization in Kodansha's Shonen Magazine Edge in November 2019. After the magazine ceased publication in October 2023, the series continued on the Magazine Pocket website. The manga, a comedy about a former delinquent student whose life is upended by a mysterious deer-horned transfer student, has been published in several collected volumes and is licensed in English by Seven Seas Entertainment. A twelve-episode anime television series adaptation produced by Wit Studio aired from July to September 2024. For the adaptation, oshioshio was credited as the original creator and also participated in production aspects such as casting and contributing ideas for anime-original content.

A recurring element in oshioshio's artistic identity is the depiction of emotional expression, particularly in her illustrations of crying girls. She has stated that she aims to create characters whose emotions feel genuine and has expressed that she does not want tears to be a purely decorative element, instead imagining the story and circumstances behind each expression. This focus on detailed, emotive character art contrasts with the absurdist, high-energy comedy found in her manga series like My Deer Friend Nokotan, a juxtaposition that she has noted amuses her when readers express surprise at the difference. Her artistic influences include the manga creators Yukiko no Sugoroku and Arina Tanemura, whose work she admired as a child, and she has cited Yotsuba&! by Kiyohiko Azuma as a significant influence on her approach to crafting comedy from everyday situations.
