Nekoko
Description
Nekoko is a Japanese writer known for creating light novel series that blend fantasy, isekai, and role-playing game mechanics. The creator began publishing web novels on the user-generated platform Shōsetsuka ni Narō in 2015. Nekoko made a commercial debut as a published author in 2016 with the light novel series Reincarnated as a Dragon Hatchling. The name Nekoko translates to cat child in Japanese. Before becoming a novelist, the creator enjoyed painting and drawing during elementary school and began thinking of becoming a writer in junior high school, starting to write on the Everystar platform during high school.
Nekoko has created numerous web novel series, many of which have been serialized on Shōsetsuka ni Narō. Among these, Reincarnated as a Dragon Hatchling began serialization in August 2015 and continues as an ongoing work. Other notable web novels include Another World Rare Journey of the Strongest Alchemist from 2020, To Knight Academy as the Ultimate Weapon of the Kingdom, Inferior Student from 2020, and The Reincarnated Heavy Knight who was Exiled if it was a Big Loss is Unmatched with Game Knowledge from 2021. Completed web novel series include Former General Undead Knight, which ran from 2017 to 2020, and Reincarnation of the Strongest Curse from 2016 to 2019.
Two of Nekoko's series have received significant multimedia adaptations. Reincarnated as a Dragon Hatchling began as a web novel and was published as a light novel by Earth Star Entertainment starting in December 2015, with illustrations by Naji Yanagida. The series later moved to Square Enix's SQEX Novel imprint beginning with the thirteenth volume in January 2021. A manga adaptation illustrated by Rio began serialization in Earth Star Entertainment's Comic Earth Star in September 2017. An anime television series adaptation produced by Felix Film and Ga-Crew premiered in January 2026. The light novel series concluded with its seventeenth volume, released on January 7, 2026. The series is licensed in English by Seven Seas Entertainment.
The Exiled Heavy Knight Knows How to Game the System began as a web novel on Shōsetsuka ni Narō in April 2021. Kodansha acquired the series and began publishing it as a light novel under their Kodansha Ranobe Books imprint in June 2022, with illustrations by Jaian. A manga adaptation illustrated by Lee Brocco started serialization on Kodansha's YanMaga Web platform in February 2022 and later transferred to Weekly Young Magazine in September 2024. An anime television series adaptation produced by GoHands is scheduled to premiere in 2026. By June 2025, the series had over three million copies in circulation. Nekoko is also credited as the writer of Hidden Class Gravity User, published on the Webtoon platform.
Nekoko's works typically feature protagonists who are reincarnated into fantasy worlds and must navigate game-like systems of levels, statuses, and evolution. The creator has stated that when writing, status and experience value tables are managed with Excel, having previously calculated everything manually until data became too extensive. Nekoko prefers to work on one story for three days at a time rather than juggling multiple works in a single day. When starting a new work, the creator typically has ten chapters already prepared in advance. Nekoko has mentioned that reading is done about once a month, during which approximately five or six works are skimmed to note main points and interesting elements, though this takes nearly an entire day and prevents writing.
