Yugo Aosaki
Description
Yugo Aosaki is a Japanese novelist and mystery writer born on June 28, 1991, in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture. He graduated from the literature department of Meiji University, where he was a member of the mystery research club. Aosaki began his professional writing career at a young age; in 2012, at 21, he became the youngest-ever recipient of the prestigious Ayukawa Tetsuya Award for his debut novel, The Gymnasium Mystery. This work marked the start of his Urazome Tenma series.
Aosaki is the original creator behind the Undead Girl Murder Farce series. The first novel was published in December 2015, with a fourth volume released in July 2023. The series features cover illustrations by Oh! great. It has been adapted into a manga illustrated by Haruka Tomoyama, which began serialization in 2016, and a television anime that aired from July to September 2023. The anime adaptation was produced by Lapin Track.
Beyond Undead Girl Murder Farce, Aosaki has authored several other notable series and standalone works. His bibliography includes the Urazome Tenma series, comprising The Gymnasium Mystery, The Aquarium Mystery, The Library Mystery, and the short story collection The Mystery of the Kazegaoka 50-Yen Festival. He also wrote the Knockin’ on Locked Door series, the short story collection The Dreary Scenery of the First Morning Train, and the award-winning novel Gremlin Grico, which received the Honkaku Mystery Award, the Mystery Writers of Japan Award, and the Yamamoto Shūgorō Prize in 2024.
Aosaki’s work is often recognized for blending the classic, logic-driven style of Ellery Queen with elements and sensibilities found in light novels and manga. This approach is designed to appeal to both traditional mystery readers and fans of character-focused, contemporary fiction. In addition to his novels, he is active as a manga original story writer. In 2022 and 2023, he contributed the story for serialized manga in Weekly Shōnen Jump, including Upside Downtown and Gas-lamp Stray Dog Detective Agency, the latter of which he wrote with artist Toshimitsu Matsubara.
