Momochi
Description
Reiko Momochi, born February 25 in Tokyo, is a Japanese manga artist whose professional career spans multiple genres and publishers. She began drawing at a young age, inspired by picture books, anime, and the works of creators such as Waki Yamato and Mitsuru Adachi. After initially publishing light romance stories, Momochi shifted her focus to more serious social issues, finding her voice in addressing problems faced by teenage girls.
Momochi is best known for the series Confidential Confessions, a collection of short stories serialized in Kodansha's Dessert magazine from 2000 to 2002. Each standalone episode tackles a difficult topic, including suicide, self-harm, sexual harassment, bullying, and prostitution. The series proved to be a significant success, selling millions of copies and leading to television adaptations of several stories. She continued to explore contemporary issues in later works. The manga Daisy, serialized in 2012, examines the aftermath of the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster through the lives of high school girls who, though living outside the evacuation zone, face fear of radiation, family financial troubles, and social ostracism. In 2016, she published Tokenai koi to chokorēto, a story about a ninth-grade girl, her Valentine's Day confession, and a mysterious romantic rival.
In a notable expansion of her artistic range, Momochi serves as the illustrator for the manga adaptation of A Gentle Noble's Vacation Recommendation. This series, based on a light novel written by Misaki with character designs by Sando, began serialization online via TO Books' Comic Corona service in December 2018. The manga presents a cozy fantasy narrative that departs significantly from the social realism of her earlier work, following a noble who simply wishes to enjoy a quiet vacation. The series has been collected into multiple tankōbon volumes and is licensed in North America by Tokyopop. An anime television series adaptation of A Gentle Noble's Vacation Recommendation is scheduled to premiere in January 2026.
Throughout her career, Reiko Momochi has demonstrated versatility as a creator. She remains recognized for her impactful shōjo manga that confronts difficult truths about adolescence, as well as for her contribution to the isekai fantasy genre as the artist of a popular and long-running manga series. Her body of work reflects a consistent focus on character-driven narratives, whether set in the recognizable struggles of contemporary Japan or the imagined realms of fantasy adventure.
