Maybe
Description
Maybe is the credited author and illustrator of the manga series Tales of Wedding Rings, which was serialized in Square Enix's Monthly Big Gangan magazine from March 2014 to August 2024 and later adapted into an anime television series that began airing in January 2024. The creator operates under the pen name Maybe, which is the shared pseudonym for a two-person cartooning team based in Japan. Both members of the duo were reportedly born in 1984. Within the collaboration, one member is responsible for illustration while the other handles the scriptwriting.
The team made their professional debut in 2005 with adult-oriented manga published by the indie publisher Okura Publishing. They continued working in adult magazines such as Comic Kairakuten and Comic MegaStore before transitioning to mainstream publications. In 2006, they published their first general-audience work, Matsugaoka Angel, in the inaugural issue of Akita Shoten's Young Champion Retsu magazine. The duo also engages in doujinshi (self-published) activities under the circle name Armored Ginkakuji.
Maybe achieved significant recognition with the series Dusk Maiden of Amnesia, which was serialized in Square Enix's Monthly Gangan Joker from 2009 to 2013. This horror manga became a commercial success and was adapted into an anime television series that aired in 2012. Following this breakthrough, the duo ceased producing adult-oriented material and has since focused on general-audience works. Their subsequent major titles include To the Abandoned Sacred Beasts, which began serialization in Kodansha's Bessatsu Shonen Magazine in 2014, and Tales of Wedding Rings, their longest-running series to date.
Tales of Wedding Rings, known in Japanese as Kekkon Yubiwa Monogatari, is a romantic fantasy manga that follows a high school boy who follows his childhood friend into another world and inadvertently becomes a hero destined to marry five princesses to gain the power to defeat a demonic threat. The manga was collected into fifteen tankōbon volumes, with the final volume released in September 2024. The anime adaptation, produced by Staple Entertainment, aired twelve episodes from January to March 2024, and a second season has since been announced. The series is licensed for English publication by Yen Press.
Beyond manga, the Maybe team has contributed to video game development as illustrators and character designers. They worked on the adult visual novels Kagerou Tōryūki in 2008 for developer railSoft and Oiran Rouge in 2011 for Liar Soft. The recurring themes in their general-audience work often blend supernatural or fantasy elements with romantic relationships, frequently incorporating horror or adventure genres. Their artistic identity is defined by this versatility across genres, having established a successful career that moved from the independent adult manga circuit to mainstream serialized publications with multiple anime adaptations.
