Description
Aya Nakahara is a Japanese manga artist known for creating romantic comedy series, most notably Lovely Complex. She was born on July 28, 1973, in Osaka Prefecture, Japan, and made her professional debut as a manga creator in 1995.

Nakahara is best recognized as the author and illustrator of Lovely Complex, which was serialized in Shueisha's Bessatsu Margaret magazine from August 2001 to August 2007. The complete series was collected in seventeen tankobon volumes. For this work, she received the 49th Shogakukan Manga Award in the shōjo category in 2004. The series centers on the relationship between a tall high school girl, Risa Koizumi, and a short boy, Atsushi Otani, who are often treated as a comedic duo by their classmates due to their height difference. The story is set in Nakahara's hometown of Osaka and incorporates elements of manzai, a style of stand-up comedy, which reflects her personal interest in the art form. She has mentioned that she listened to manzai recordings on her commute while in high school.

The popularity of Lovely Complex led to several adaptations, establishing Nakahara's significance as a source creator for multimedia projects. The manga was adapted into a live-action film released in July 2006, directed by Kitaji Ishikawa. A 24-episode anime television series produced by Toei Animation aired from April to September 2007. Additionally, the story was adapted into an adventure video game for the PlayStation 2, also released in 2006.

Beyond Lovely Complex, Nakahara has created numerous other manga series. Her earlier works include titles such as Benkyou Shinasai! and Love! Love! Love! from the late 1990s, as well as Ringo Nikki. Later works include Nanaco Robin, Berry Dynamite, and the series Dame na Watashi ni Koishite Kudasai, which was serialized from 2013 to 2016. Throughout her career, she has consistently worked within the romance and romantic comedy genres, often focusing on the dynamics of relationships and character interactions. Her artistic identity is also informed by a focus on fashion, as she has expressed a fondness for drawing clothing, which is evident in the casual attire worn by characters in Lovely Complex.
