Description
Ryo Hanada is a Japanese manga artist born on June 15, 1987. Hanada began their career by winning the Special Prize at Square Enix's 2012 Young GanGan Manga Awards for a submission titled BLIND. After spending time in self-publishing, Hanada made a professional debut in 2013 with Kodansha's MORNING magazine.
Hanada is the creator of the dark fantasy manga series Devils' Line. The series was serialized in Kodansha's seinen manga magazine Monthly Morning Two from March 2013 to December 2018 and compiled into thirteen volumes plus a short story collection. An anime television adaptation produced by Platinum Vision aired from April to June 2018, with Hanada credited as the original creator. A sequel manga titled Devils' Line II: Trigger began serialization in Morning Two in January 2022.
Thematically, Hanada's work in Devils' Line explores concepts of otherness, control, and the tension between human and monster identities. The story centers on a world where vampires called devils live secretly among humans, focusing on a half-devil protagonist who struggles with his own violent urges and a human woman who becomes involved in his world. Hanada has cited personal experience with non-binary gender identity as influencing the creation of certain characters within the series.
