Atsuo Ueda

Description
Atsuo Ueda is a Japanese manga artist best known as the illustrator for Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest, a sequel to Hiro Mashima's popular fantasy series. Ueda made his professional debut in 2015 with the tennis manga Retriever Hachi. He subsequently created the medical thriller Dr. Prisoner before taking on his most high-profile assignment. Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest marks Ueda's first manga work to be published in English.

The series is a collaborative effort in which Mashima provides the story and storyboard layouts while Ueda is responsible for the finished artwork. The official credit structure for each volume lists Mashima for story and layouts with Ueda as the artist. This production model allows the series to maintain the visual consistency and tone of the original Fairy Tail while continuing the narrative. The English-language edition of Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest is published by Kodansha Comics, with the first volume released in 2019.

The plot follows Natsu, Lucy, Happy, Erza, and the rest of the Fairy Tail guild as they undertake the legendary 100 Years Quest, a mission that no one has completed since the founding of the oldest guild over a century ago. The story takes the characters to a new continent where they encounter mysterious towns, powerful spirits, and formidable enemies. As the series has progressed, Ueda has illustrated story arcs involving the Moon Dragon God Selene and parallel worlds such as Edolas, demonstrating his ability to render the expansive fantasy elements that define the Fairy Tail universe.

The manga series has been ongoing since its debut in Japan in 2018, with English volumes continuing to be released through the present day, including volumes 17, 18, and 19 published in 2025. Through his work on this continuation of one of the most popular manga franchises of the 2000s, Atsuo Ueda has become a significant contributor to the Fairy Tail legacy, bringing the return of beloved characters to a global audience.
