Matsuri Hino

Description
Matsuri Hino is a Japanese manga artist and writer, recognized as the original creator of the popular series Vampire Knight, which was adapted into the anime television series Vampire Knight and its second season, Vampire Knight Guilty.

Hino was born in Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan. She maintains a private personal life, with Matsuri Hino being a pseudonym, and her birth year has not been publicly disclosed. Before her professional debut, she worked in a bookstore. Her passion for drawing began in childhood, and she was particularly influenced by the shōjo manga Tokimeki Tonight.

She made her professional debut as a manga creator on September 10, 1995, with the one-shot story Kono Yume ga Sametara, published in the magazine LaLa DX by Hakusensha. This debut followed her winning the Gold Debut prize in the 9th LaLa Manga Grand Prix. In the early years of her career, she created several other short manga stories for LaLa and LaLa DX. Her first serialized manga series, Captive Hearts (Toraware no Minoue), was published from 1999 to 2002. She followed this with MeruPuri: Märchen Prince (2002-2004) and the short series Wanted (2005).

Hino is best known for her gothic romance manga Vampire Knight, which was serialized in Hakusensha's LaLa magazine from November 2004 to May 2013. The series was compiled into 19 tankōbon volumes. Its popularity led to a 26-episode anime adaptation produced by Studio Deen, which aired on TV Tokyo in two seasons. The first 13-episode season, Vampire Knight, broadcast from April to July 2008. The second season, Vampire Knight Guilty, broadcast from October to December 2008. The anime closely followed the manga for its first ten volumes before concluding with an original storyline. Following the conclusion of the original series, Hino began writing and illustrating a sequel, Vampire Knight Memories, which started serialization in LaLa DX in June 2016 and continued until August 2025, being collected into 11 volumes.

Thematically, Hino’s work is primarily within the shōjo genre, targeting a young female audience with narratives centered on romance, fantasy, and drama. While her earlier works like MeruPuri have a lighter, fairy-tale tone, Vampire Knight explores darker and more complex themes. The series uses vampire mythology to examine forbidden love, the integration of outsiders, the conflict between human and supernatural worlds, and the anxieties of transitioning into adulthood, a theme often explored through the protagonist Yuki Cross.

Hino’s artistic identity is defined by a distinctive, elegant style that evolved over the course of her career. Vampire Knight in particular is noted for its gothic atmosphere, elaborate backgrounds, and detailed character designs, with a later shift toward cleaner lines and a focus on emotional expression. Her success with the Vampire Knight franchise has cemented her significance in the manga industry, with the series selling over five million copies in Japan by the time of its 18th volume. Her contributions have been recognized with several awards, including the Outstanding Debut prize at the 24th Hakusensha Athena Newcomer Awards in 1999 for Captive Hearts, and in France, where Vampire Knight won the Japan Expo Award for best shōjo in 2009 and Shuriken and Pleats won the Prix Mangawa for best shōjo in 2017. A 25th career anniversary exhibition was held in Tokyo and Niigata in 2019.
