Sakurako Gokurakuin

Description
Sakurako Gokurakuin is a Japanese manga artist and original creator, known for her work in both mainstream and boys' love (BL) genres. Her professional career in manga began in 1985, and she is recognized for creating the popular series Sekirei. Gokurakuin uses different pen names to distinguish between her work for different audiences; she publishes under the name Sakurako Gokurakuin for her general and少年漫画 (shōnen manga) works, while her BL works are typically released under the name Ashika Sakura.

Gokurakuin is best known as the author and illustrator of the manga series Sekirei, which was serialized in Square Enix's Young Gangan magazine from 2004 to 2015 and collected in 18 tankōbon volumes. The success of the manga led to its adaptation into an anime television series. The first season, titled Sekirei, was broadcast in Japan from July to September 2008, and was followed by a second season, Sekirei: Pure Engagement, which aired from July to September 2010. Official sources for the anime credit Gokurakuin as the original story creator and original character designer for the series.

Beyond Sekirei, her other notable works under the Sakurako Gokurakuin name include several manga series. These works span a variety of genres and publishers. Category: Freaks (also known as 魔物特搜員), a series published in Monthly Birz, and Juvenile Orion (水瓶戰記 獵戶座少年), a five-volume series based on the Aquarian Age trading card game and serialized in Monthly Stencil, are part of her earlier portfolio. Her other completed series include Returners: The Crimson Reviver (リターナーズ -赫の奇還者-) in Monthly Young Jump, and later works such as Brave Star Romantics, Rokushou!, and廻生のカリカチュア, for which she handled the original concept, setting, and storyboards.

In the BL genre, as Ashika Sakura, her most internationally recognized work is Sensitive Pornograph, a collection of short stories that was adapted into an original video animation (OVA) in 2004. This body of work demonstrates the duality of her creative identity, moving between mainstream action-romance and niche BL content.

As of 2023, Gokurakuin remains active as a creator. She is credited as the artist for the manga adaptation of 咲-Saki- re:KING'S TILE DRAW, a spin-off of the popular Saki franchise, which began serialization in 2020. Additionally, she launched the series 千万社異世界通商部 in Monthly Shonen Gangan in 2023, indicating her continued involvement in the industry. Through her long-running and diverse body of work, Gokurakuin has established a significant presence in the Japanese manga industry, noted for both her commercial success and her ability to work across different genres and demographics.
