Aya Shouoto

Description
Aya Shouoto is a Japanese manga artist and illustrator born on December 25, 1977. She began her professional career in 1999 with the release of the single-volume work Suki!, which was published by Futami Shobo. In the early years of her career, she was active in the doujinshi (self-published) scene, creating works based on series such as Mobile Suit Gundam SEED, xxxHOLiC, and Code Geass. Her initial published works frequently fell within the Boys Love genre.

Her creative focus shifted over time to romantic mystery and fantasy stories aimed at a shōjo (girls) audience. Her first longer-running series in this vein was Stray Love Hearts, which was serialized from 2008 to 2010 and spanned five volumes. She subsequently created several other series that became well-known in the shōjo genre, including Kiss of Rose Princess, which ran for nine volumes from 2008 to 2011, and He’s My Vampire, a ten-volume series published between 2010 and 2014. A hallmark of her work during this period was the combination of romance with supernatural or gothic fantasy elements.

Shouoto’s most prominent and successful work is The Demon Prince of Momochi House. The manga was serialized in Kadokawa Shoten’s Monthly Asuka magazine from February 2013 to August 2019 and was compiled into 16 volumes. The series was licensed for an English-language release in North America by Viz Media under its Shojo Beat imprint. A sequel manga, The Demon Prince of Momochi House: Succession, began serialization in July 2023.

The success of The Demon Prince of Momochi House led to an anime television adaptation. The series was produced by the animation studio Drive and directed by Bob Shirahata, with Yasuko Aoki handling series composition. It aired for 12 episodes from January to March 2024. Crunchyroll licensed the series for streaming outside of Asia.

Shouoto’s artistic identity is characterized by detailed, refined artwork with a strong emphasis on romantic and visually ornate imagery. A German anime and manga magazine described her as a proven expert in creating stories that “romantically glisten and sparkle”. Her narratives consistently blend contemporary romance with elements of the supernatural, myths, and fantasy, often involving themes of destiny, mystical bonds, and the intersection between the human world and the spirit realm. Beyond her original series, she has also contributed character designs for other manga, such as Kōtei Heika no Osewa-gakari, which began in 2021.

Her body of work represents a significant contribution to the shōjo genre, particularly in the fantasy-romance sub-genre, where she has maintained a consistent and popular presence for over two decades. Her works have been translated and published in numerous languages, solidifying her reputation as a widely recognized creator in the international manga market.
