Yomi Hirasaka

Description
Yomi Hirasaka is a Japanese light novel author, game scenario writer, lyricist, and manga original creator who debuted in 2004. He hails from Gifu Prefecture, a detail that later influenced the setting of some of his works. His career began when his debut novel, Haunted!, won an excellence award in the 0th MF Bunko J Light Novel Rookie Awards. His pseudonym is believed to be derived from Yomotsu Hirasaka, a term from Japanese mythology referring to the boundary between the world of the living and the world of the dead.

Hirasaka is best known as the author of the phenomenally successful light novel series Haganai: I Don't Have Many Friends. The series, published by MF Bunko J with illustrations by Buriki, was serialized from 2009 to 2015 and became the best-selling light novel series of 2011. Its popularity led to a wide range of adaptations, including multiple manga series, an anime television series, and a live-action film. His next major work, A Sister's All You Need, was published under Shogakukan's Gagaga Bunko imprint from 2015 to 2020, with illustrations by Kantoku. Like Haganai, this series was also adapted into an anime.

For these anime adaptations, Hirasaka has taken on roles beyond that of the original creator. He served as the series composition writer and scriptwriter for the A Sister's All You Need anime. His most recent major work, A Salad Bowl of Eccentrics, is a light novel series also illustrated by Kantoku and set in his home prefecture of Gifu. The series began publication in 2021 and was adapted into an anime that aired in 2024, with Hirasaka again contributing as a scriptwriter.

Throughout his career, Hirasaka’s works have primarily been romantic comedies that function as ensemble cast-driven slice-of-life stories. He is noted for his direct involvement in the adaptations of his stories, particularly in the anime production process, and for a writing style that often incorporates philosophical musings on life and existence into comedic narratives. His work has consistently achieved significant commercial and critical success, with Haganai placing second in the Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi! guidebook rankings in 2011.
