Saki Nakagawa
Description
Saki Nakagawa is a Japanese manga artist known for creating the spin-off series Attack on Titan: Junior High. Born on April 29, 1990, in Kumamoto Prefecture, she is a graduate of Kyushu Designer Gakuin, a vocational school for design and manga, from which she completed the manga department in March 2012. Her connection to the manga industry began before her debut, as she attended the same design graduate school in Kyushu as Hajime Isayama, the creator of the original Attack on Titan series, where the two first met.
Nakagawa's career as a creator is defined almost entirely by her work on Attack on Titan: Junior High. Her involvement began when she entered and won a competition to create an official spin-off of Isayama's hit series. This marked her debut as a professional manga artist, with the series first serialized in 2012. In Attack on Titan: Junior High, Nakagawa serves as both the writer and illustrator, reimagining the characters and grim world of the original as a comedic slice-of-life story set in a school environment. The series was subsequently adapted into a twelve-episode anime television series in 2015.
Her artistic identity is closely tied to parody and character reinterpretation. Working with the direct involvement of the original author, Hajime Isayama, she established a distinct tone for the spin-off that balanced humor with a respect for the source material. In interviews, Isayama noted that he suggested a comedic direction similar to Blame Academy and praised Nakagawa for creative ideas he felt he would never have conceived, such as a chapter where characters sneak into a classroom of Titans. Nakagawa has also expressed that creating the series came with the pressure of ensuring her interpretations of beloved characters aligned with their established personalities.
Nakagawa's industry significance stems from her successful execution of a major manga spin-off, a challenging endeavor that requires satisfying an existing fanbase while establishing a new creative voice. Beyond Attack on Titan: Junior High, she has also created a related series titled Attack on Titan: High School. Hajime Isayama himself has voiced encouragement for her to use the success of the spin-off as a stepping stone to create her own original work in the future.
