Gamon Sakurai
Description
Gamon Sakurai is a Japanese manga artist and writer, born in Tokyo in 1986. He began his career in the manga industry in 2006 when he received an honorable mention in the prestigious Four Seasons Award from Kodansha's Monthly Afternoon magazine. In 2008, he won the Grand Prize in the same competition's winter session, leading to his winning short story being published the following year.
Sakurai is best known as the creator of the manga series Ajin: Demi-Human, which began serialization in 2012. The series had an unusual creative origin, initially starting as a collaboration with writer Tsuina Miura, who served as the original author while Sakurai provided the art. After the publication of the first volume, Miura left the project, and from the second volume onward, Sakurai took over as both writer and artist, continuing the series independently until its conclusion.
The Ajin series follows Kei Nagai, a high school student who discovers he is an Ajin, a mysterious, nearly immortal being capable of regenerating from any wound. The story explores his flight from a government that seeks to capture and experiment on Ajin, as well as the violent conflict between humanity and other Ajin who seek to upend society. The manga was published in English by Kodansha USA and became a commercial success, with the first four volumes selling over 2.3 million copies in Japan by March 2013.
Sakurai's work on Ajin has been adapted into multiple anime productions. The first was a three-part theatrical film series released between 2015 and 2016: Ajin: Demi-Human - Collide (released as Ajin: Impulse), Ajin: Demi-Human - Compel (released as Ajin: Conflict), and Ajin: Demi-Human - Confront (released as Ajin: Compel). In 2016, a television anime series also premiered, spanning 29 episodes and later available as a Netflix original series. Additionally, a live-action film adaptation was released in 2017. Sakurai is credited as a creator or writer for these anime and film adaptations, reflecting his role as the original author of the source material.
A recurring aspect of Sakurai's artistic identity is his acknowledged passion for video games. He frequently incorporates references to games within Ajin, including chapter titles inspired by game franchises and characters, such as the antagonist Sato, who is portrayed as an enthusiast of shooters and platform games. His narrative style blends supernatural themes with science fiction action, focusing on tactical combat, immortal characters, and the moral ambiguities of how society treats those who are different.
Sakurai's significance in the industry stems from creating one of the notable action manga of the 2010s, a series distinguished by its cold, calculating protagonist and its exploration of what it means to be human through the lens of immortality. His ability to take over the writing duties on Ajin after the departure of the initial author and guide the series to a successful conclusion demonstrated his capabilities as a complete manga creator, both writing and illustrating a complex, long-running narrative.
