Bill Martin
Description
Bill Martin, born William E. Martin on October 8, 1945, was an American voice actor, musician, and screenwriter whose career spanned several decades until his passing in 2016. His entry into voice acting was part of a broader creative life that included songwriting for The Monkees and Harry Nilsson, as well as co-writing the screenplay for the 1987 film Harry and the Hendersons. His first movie voice role was as the Rock Man in the 1971 animated film The Point.
Martin is perhaps best recognized in animation for providing the voice of the villainous Nightmare King in the 1989 animated feature Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland, where he was credited as William E. Martin. This role placed him in a high-profile, internationally produced film that combined Japanese animation with an American voice cast.
Beyond this film, Martin built a substantial career voicing characters in numerous iconic animated television series of the 1980s and 1990s. He is notably remembered for taking over the role of The Shredder in the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series following the departure of James Avery, voicing the character in seasons eight and ten. His other television voice credits include roles in The Transformers as Broadside, The Real Ghostbusters as Samhain, Challenge of the GoBots, and Karate Kommandos as Claw.
In addition to his work in television and film, Martin was a prolific voice actor in the video game industry during the 1990s and 2000s. His game credits include numerous titles in the Star Wars franchise, such as Star Wars: X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter, Star Wars: Rebellion, Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. He was also the voice of the popular dwarven character Korgan Bloodaxe in the critically acclaimed role-playing games Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn and its expansion, Throne of Bhaal.
Throughout his career, Martin collaborated frequently with his friend, Monkee Michael Nesmith. This partnership included co-starring in Nesmith's Grammy-winning video Elephant Parts and the production of Martin's own comedy special, An Evening with Sir William Martin. Notably, Martin even served as the physical model for the character of Bigfoot in the film Harry and the Hendersons, which he co-wrote. Bill Martin passed away on January 27, 2016, at the age of 70, leaving behind a diverse body of work that spanned music, live-action writing, and a significant contribution to the world of animation and video game voice acting.
