Aneko Yusagi
Description
Aneko Yusagi is a Japanese novelist known primarily as the original creator of the popular fantasy series The Rising of the Shield Hero. The creator’s body of work is characterized by stories that often begin as web novels before being adapted into light novels, manga, and anime.
Yusagi began publishing fiction in October 2012 on the Japanese web fiction website Shōsetsuka ni Narō. The debut work was the science fiction series Dimension Wave. Later the same month, Yusagi started serializing what would become the most famous work, The Rising of the Shield Hero (Tate no Yūsha no Nariagari). The fantasy story follows Naofumi Iwatani, who is summoned to a parallel world as the Shield Hero, only to be betrayed and forced to rise from a position of great disadvantage.
The Rising of the Shield Hero was acquired for official publication by Media Factory under its MF Books imprint in 2013, with illustrations by Minami Seira. A manga adaptation illustrated by Aiya Kyū began serialization in Media Factory’s Monthly Comic Flapper in 2014. The series received an anime adaptation produced by Kinema Citrus, which premiered in 2019, followed by additional seasons in subsequent years. The light novels and manga have been released in English by One Peace Books. A spin-off light novel and manga series, The Reprise of the Spear Hero, which focuses on a rival character, began publication in 2017.
Beyond the Shield Hero franchise, Yusagi has authored several other light novel series. These include Ore dake Kaereru Kurasu Teni, published by MF Books in 2016; Dokutsukai no Dōbōsha, published in 2018; and Isekai no Sensha Toshite Kuni ni Manekareta Kedo, Kotowatte Heishi Kara Hajimeru Koto ni Shita, published by SB Creative in 2019. This last work received the Manga Adaptation Prize at the 7th Netto Shōsetsu Awards, leading to a manga adaptation in 2020. Another work, Kinō Atsukaisarete Pātī kara Tsuihōsareta, was published by MF Books in 2021.
Yusagi was born in Kanagawa Prefecture and has stated a personal goal to rise and find success, a theme that resonates in the protagonist’s journey in The Rising of the Shield Hero. The creator’s career is notable for originating within the web novel community and achieving significant commercial success across multiple media formats, becoming a prominent figure in the isekai genre.
