Noboru Tsuburaya
Description
Noboru Tsuburaya was a Japanese film producer and the third president of Tsuburaya Productions, the company founded by his father, Eiji Tsuburaya, who created the Ultraman franchise. Born in Tokyo on May 10, 1935, Tsuburaya took the helm of the family business after the sudden death of his older brother, Hajime, in 1973 and served as president until 1994. While primarily known as a producer and executive, he was also a creative contributor to several animated works within the Ultraman universe, often under the pen name Noboru Tani. His most direct role as an original creator is for the anime television series Ultraman Kids: Haha o Tazunete 3000 Man Kōnen, for which he is credited as the original creator and chief production supervisor. This series is a space-age parody of the classic story Heidi, following the journey of a young alien boy searching for his mother. Beyond this work, Tsuburaya’s creative influence is visible across multiple anime projects. He served as a producer on the 1979 anime series The Ultraman, the first animated television entry in the franchise. He was also the executive producer and an original concept contributor for the 1989 animated film Ultraman USA and held planning credits on other anime such as Ultraman Kids no Kotowaza Monogatari and the theatrical short Ultraman Kids: M7.8 Sei no Yukai na Nakama. His recurring artistic identity is tied to the stewardship and expansion of the Ultra Series, particularly its adaptation into animation and international co-productions. He was responsible for initiating overseas projects like Ultraman Great in Australia and Ultraman Powered in the United States, demonstrating a commitment to globalizing the franchise beyond its live-action tokusatsu roots. Tsuburaya died of stomach cancer on June 11, 1995, but his role as a producer and creative overseer was crucial in navigating the company through challenging times and ensuring the continued legacy of the Ultraman brand across multiple media formats, including anime.
