Kaisei Enomoto
Description
Kaisei Enomoto is a Japanese writer known as the original creator of the light novel series A Herbivorous Dragon of 5,000 Years Gets Unfairly Villainized. This series represents Enomoto's primary credited work in the anime and manga industries.
Enomoto began the story as a web novel, serializing it online between June 2017 and June 2020 on the user-generated novel publishing website Shousetsuka ni Narou. The series was subsequently acquired for print publication by Kadokawa Shoten, which released three light novel volumes from February 2018 to October 2019 under its Kadokawa Sneaker Bunko imprint, with illustrations provided by artist Shugao.
The commercial success of the light novels led to a manga adaptation. Square Enix published a manga version drawn by artist Kouichi Muro, which was serialized in the shounen manga magazine Monthly Gangan Joker from January 2018 to November 2019. This adaptation was compiled into five tankoubon volumes, with the final volume released in March 2020. Enomoto is consistently credited as the original author for this manga adaptation.
A Chinese-Japanese original net animation adaptation was produced by Studio LAN and released on the Bilibili streaming platform. The Chinese dub premiered in July 2022, followed by a Japanese dub that aired on television from January to March 2023. A second season premiered in Japan in October 2024. In this adaptation, Enomoto is credited as the original creator of the source material.
The central work, A Herbivorous Dragon of 5,000 Years Gets Unfairly Villainized, presents a fantasy narrative that subverts traditional dragon mythology. The story follows a harmless, vegetarian dragon who is mistakenly identified as an evil creature by a village girl who offers herself as a sacrifice. This premise, which contrasts the dragon's peaceful nature with his fearsome reputation, forms the core of Enomoto's artistic identity as a creator who plays with established genre expectations. The series has also been released in French under the title Le Puissant Dragon vegan.
