Margot Kidder
Description
Margot Kidder was a Canadian-American actress whose career in film and television spanned five decades, and she was also active as a voice actress, particularly in animated series and films during the 1980s and 1990s. Born in 1948 in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada, she began her professional acting career in the late 1960s. Kidder gained international fame for her live-action role as Lois Lane in the Superman film series starring Christopher Reeve, a part she played in four movies released between 1978 and 1987. This recognition as a prominent film actress provided a foundation for her subsequent work in voice acting.
One of Kidder's significant contributions to anime in the English-speaking world was her role as the Narrator for the 1987 English-language adaptation of the Japanese anime television series The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. This version of the series, based on L. Frank Baum's books, was dubbed into English by the Canadian company Cinar Films for broadcast on HBO. Kidder's narration guided viewers through the story of Dorothy's adventures in the Land of Oz, and this adaptation was later compiled into films for home video release. Her involvement in this project brought her voice to a classic tale as interpreted by Japanese animation.
Beyond this specific role, Kidder lent her voice to a variety of other animated projects. She provided the voice of Gaia, the Spirit of the Earth, in the popular environmental cartoon Captain Planet and the Planeteers, taking over the role from Whoopi Goldberg. Her work on the series was driven by a personal concern for environmental issues. She also voiced the villainess Solitaire in the 1986 animated film GoBots: Battle of the Rock Lords. Additionally, Kidder was the voice of Rebecca Madison in the mid-1990s series Phantom 2040 and made guest appearances on shows such as Aaahh!!! Real Monsters. Her voice acting work, like her on-screen career, demonstrated her versatility across different genres and formats. Margot Kidder passed away in 2018.
