Mai Tanaka

Description
Mai Tanaka is a Japanese manga artist best known as the creator of the supernatural comedy series A Terrified Teacher at Ghoul School!. Her professional career is defined by this single, long-running serialization, which began in 2014 and has become her signature work.

Tanaka's journey as a creator started long before her professional debut. She has been drawing manga since the first grade of elementary school, a hobby that continued into her adolescence. During her middle school years, she began crafting a hardcore adventure fantasy story that she continued to develop for six years, filling dozens of notebooks for her own enjoyment without ever showing the work to others. This early, private dedication to the craft laid the groundwork for her later artistic identity.

Before creating A Terrified Teacher at Ghoul School!, Tanaka's professional portfolio included several shorter works. She submitted a manga titled 10KINGS to the 17th Square Enix Manga Awards in late 2010, where she received an honorable mention. Her official debut one-shot, Mirai Teikoku, was published in July 2011, followed by other one-shots like Gokuraku Joudou no Hotoke-san in January 2013 and a three-chapter series called Karma Karma from December 2013 to February 2014. These early publications were with Square Enix, the publisher with whom she would later find her greatest success.

The creation of A Terrified Teacher at Ghoul School! marked a significant turning point in Tanaka's style. Prior to this work, she had always drawn serious shonen manga. However, her editor at the time advised her that her dialogue was interesting and that a comedy would be a better fit for her talents. Although Tanaka had never drawn a comedy before and was initially hesitant, she agreed to try the genre. This editorial recommendation proved successful, and the series became her first major serialization, launching in Square Enix's Monthly GFantasy magazine on November 18, 2014. The series follows Haruaki Abe, a timid and crybaby teacher who takes a job at Hyakki Academy, only to discover his new students are all yokai, or supernatural beings. Despite his cowardly nature, he strives to become a good educator to his mischievous and powerful class. The manga has been compiled into numerous tankobon volumes and is licensed for English release in North America by Yen Press.

The success of the main series led to an expansion of the franchise. A spin-off manga centered on the character Mamekichi Maizuka, titled The Terrifying Students at Ghoul School!, began serialization on Square Enix's PFantapy brand on March 1, 2018. The series has also seen an anime television adaptation. Produced by the studio Satelight, the A Terrified Teacher at Ghoul School! anime aired for 24 episodes from October 2024 to March 2025, bringing Tanaka's characters and world to a wider audience.

Tanaka's creative process is characterized by a unique approach to storytelling. She is the type of creator who starts by thinking about the ending of a story first. For longer story arcs, she begins with the final scene and then works backward, planning how to reach that conclusion. This method means she rarely struggles with the punchline or final panel, even if the process of building the story toward that point can be difficult. She notes that while some storyboards come together in as little as half a day, others can take two weeks or more as she navigates the path to her predetermined ending.

A recurring theme in Tanaka's work is the humorous juxtaposition of the ordinary with the supernatural. A Terrified Teacher at Ghoul School! centers on a very human, relatable protagonist—a nervous and inexperienced teacher—navigating the extraordinary chaos of a classroom full of yokai. This premise allows for a steady stream of comedic situations born from culture clashes and the students' supernatural pranks, while also exploring themes of personal growth, overcoming fear, and finding one's place in an unfamiliar environment. Her artistic identity is strongly tied to comedy and character-driven narratives, a path she was encouraged to pursue by her editor after having previously focused on serious adventure stories.

Mai Tanaka's significance in the industry is notable for having her first major serialization become a long-running success that has spanned over a decade and inspired an anime adaptation. Her career demonstrates the impact of an editor's guidance in helping a creator find their niche, and her personal history as a lifelong manga fan who drew for her own satisfaction speaks to a deep, intrinsic passion for the medium. With the ongoing success of A Terrified Teacher at Ghoul School! and its growing multimedia presence, Tanaka has established herself as a distinctive comedic voice in the world of shonen manga.
