The artwork uses screentones with restraint, while employing more graphic tone patterns for establishing atmosphere. Panel layouts are described as dynamic, guiding the reader's eye across the page, and flashbacks are immediately identifiable by their black backgrounds. The creator limits the depiction of intimate scenes to foreplay and typically frames such moments from the bust up rather than showing explicit detail.
Thematically, the works of Memeco Arii frequently explore serious subjects alongside romantic comedy elements. Within Hitorijime My Hero, the narrative addresses topics such as coming out to parents, the complications of a relationship where one partner is a minor, financial struggles, part-time work, family dysfunction, and the difficulty of accepting help from others. The series has been noted for examining the origins of tension in a relationship, including lack of communication and the challenges of confronting problems directly. The creator balances dramatic and comedic moments with flexibility, maintaining tension during important events while allowing characters to mature gradually over the course of the narrative.
