Ryōsuke Asakura
Description
Ryōsuke Asakura is a Japanese manga artist known for creating the series Val x Love, which was adapted into an anime television series. He made his professional debut in the manga industry in 2013 as the illustrator of the manga adaptation of the film A Certain Magical Index: The Miracle of Endymion, which was published in Square Enix's Monthly Shonen Gangan magazine.
In December 2015, Asakura launched his first original manga series, Val x Love, in the same magazine. The series, which blends action, fantasy, and harem comedy genres, follows a high school boy named Takuma Akutsu who is tasked by the god Odin with saving the world by forming romantic bonds with Odin's nine daughters, the Valkyries. The manga concluded in March 2023 after being collected into sixteen tankōbon volumes. The series was licensed for English release in North America by Yen Press. An anime television adaptation of Val x Love was produced by Hoods Entertainment and aired for twelve episodes from October to December 2019.
Following the conclusion of Val x Love, Asakura began a new series titled The Shikisaki Sisters Want to be Exposed in Weekly Young Jump, a seinen manga magazine, on December 2, 2021. This serialization marked his first work to be published on a weekly schedule. In February 2024, he launched another original series, Anastasia's 9 Days of Life, returning to the pages of Monthly Shonen Gangan.
Asakura's artistic identity is often associated with the harem and fantasy genres, frequently featuring narratives centered on a male protagonist and a cast of female heroines with distinct personalities. His work on Val x Love prominently incorporates themes from Norse mythology, such as Valkyries and the god Odin, reimagined within a contemporary romantic comedy setting. He is also known to be the brother of fellow manga artist Shizumu Watanabe.
