Before his screen career, he grew up in Texas and earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of Texas at Austin, followed by a Master of Fine Arts from Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts. He was also active in Boston's theater scene, where he founded a theater company and directed for a dance company.
