Gerri Sorrells

Description
Gerri Sorrells is a Tokyo-born voice actor and bilingual talent with a career spanning several decades, recognized for her work in anime voice dubbing, television, and audio production in Japan. She holds American nationality, born to parents who were in Tokyo during the post-war occupation, and she identifies strongly with her Japanese heritage through her mother, who was Japanese-American. Sorrells grew up in Japan, attending military schools on American bases from elementary through high school. After a brief and challenging period attending college and acting school in the United States, she returned to Japan to enroll at Sophia University in Tokyo, where she earned a degree in psychology and education. Her mother's pragmatic advice to focus on her education and pursue a career as a character actress proved formative.

Sorrells' entry into the entertainment industry began while she was still an undergraduate student at Sophia University, where she was credited as an original "bi-lin gal" using both Japanese and English in her first work for NHK television. This early start marked the beginning of a prolific career. She later pursued graduate studies in Japanese sociology and also entered the graduate school of Temple University to study TESOL. She and her husband, whom she met at Sophia University, own a production company that creates educational and entertainment content for children and adults.

As a voice actor, Gerri Sorrells contributed to the English dubs of several prominent anime productions, primarily during the era when anime was being localized for international audiences. She is known for providing the voice of Jamie Robinson in the English dub of the classic super robot anime series Voltus 5, also known as Voltes V. This dub was produced by Frontier Enterprises and featured a cast that included other voice actors such as Nancy Culluci and William Ross. She also voiced the character Saba in the theatrical film Cyborg 009 Gekijō Ban: Chō Ginga Densetsu, a 1980 entry in the long-running Cyborg 009 franchise. Her anime voice work further extends to other films, including a role in the feature film based on the series Captain Harlock, titled Capitan Harlock - L'arcadia della mia giovinezza, and a part in La lampada di Aladino. In addition to these films, Sorrells's voice can be heard in various video game software, including titles such as Ace Combat 3: Electrosphere and Musashiden II: Blade Master.

Beyond her specific anime roles, Sorrells has built an extensive career as a bilingual voice talent in Japan, lending her voice to a wide variety of media. Her work includes narrations for commercials, movies, corporate video presentations, and language education texts. She has been a familiar voice for public announcements in locations such as airlines, airports, train stations, and theme parks. A significant achievement in her career was her long-running involvement with the NHK television program Eigo de Asobou, an educational show that became a national phenomenon and was considered a pioneer in English-language children's programming in Japan. Her voice work has also extended to radio, where she has worked as a DJ and talk show hostess.

In addition to her performance work, Gerri Sorrells is also an author and scriptwriter. She has written and narrated bilingual children's books accompanied by audio CDs, often putting her own twist on classic fairy tales. Her contributions to the community include directing productions for the Tokyo Theater for Children and participating in local charitable events. Her body of work, encompassing anime dubbing, educational media, and commercial voiceover, demonstrates her versatility and enduring presence in the Japanese media landscape.
