Charlie Adler is an American voice actor and voice director with a prolific career spanning several decades, primarily known for his extensive work in animated television and film. Born on October 2, 1956, he began his professional acting career in a commercial in 1971 and spent time in New York theater, starring in a production of Torch Song Trilogy, before relocating to California in 1986 to focus on voice work. His first animation role was voicing Spike in the 1984 special Rescue at Midnight Castle.
Adler's career gained momentum in the mid-1980s with a variety of roles in popular series. He provided voices for characters such as Nat Smurfling in The Smurfs, Silverbolt in The Transformers, and Eric Raymond and others in Jem. During this period, he also voiced the character Andy in the 1987 animated television film Ultraman: The Adventure Begins, a co-production between Hanna-Barbera and Tsuburaya Productions that brought the Ultraman franchise to American audiences in anime style.
The 1990s marked a significant period for Adler, during which he originated some of his most iconic roles. He was the original voice of Buster Bunny in Tiny Toon Adventures, a role for which he was cast at the insistence of producer Tom Ruegger and voice director Andrea Romano. He also voiced Chance T-Bone Furlong in SWAT Kats: The Radical Squadron, Ickis in Aaahh!!! Real Monsters, and both Ed and Bev Bighead in Rocko's Modern Life. Adler also took on the titular roles and The Red Guy in the Cartoon Network series Cow and Chicken and its spin-off I Am Weasel, a performance that earned him an Annie Award for Outstanding Individual Achievement for Voice Acting in an Animated Television Production.
In addition to his acting, Adler has built an extensive career as a voice director. He began directing in the late 1990s with the series Rugrats and went on to direct episodes of other Klasky Csupo productions such as The Wild Thornberrys, Rocket Power, and All Grown Up!.
