Shinji Saijyo
Description
Shinji Saijyo is a Japanese manga artist born on November 25. He made his professional debut in 1992 with the short work Kaiki Dōmei, which was published in a supplement of Weekly Shōnen Champion. His first serialized manga, the martial arts story Tonari no Kakutō-Ō (Fighting King), ran from 1992 to 1994. Before his official debut, Saijyo created adult manga using the pen names Seiichi Nishihara and Ryokuichi Higashihara.
Saijyo is best known as the creator of the cooking manga Iron Wok Jan, which he wrote and illustrated. The series was serialized in Akita Shoten's Weekly Shōnen Champion from June 1995 to March 2000 and collected into 27 volumes. The story follows the brilliant and aggressive young chef Jan Akiyama, who views cooking as a battle for supremacy, in contrast to his rival Kiriko Gobanchō's philosophy of cooking from the heart. The manga was licensed for English release in North America, first by ComicsOne and later by DrMaster. A sequel, Iron Wok Jan! R: The Summit Operations, was serialized in the same magazine from November 2006 to December 2010 and compiled into 10 volumes. Saijyo later launched a successor series, Tetsunabe no Jan!! 2nd, in 2017.
Following the conclusion of the original Iron Wok Jan in 2000, Saijyo left Akita Shoten and created several manga across different publishers, including Shogakukan, Shueisha, Hakusensha, and Kodansha. These works include Hana no Dai TOKYO Kengō Retsuden: Tōta Mairimasu!!, Daiburari, Reset Point, 365-po no Yūki, Men'ō Futatsuki!, and Devil 17: Hōkago no Kyōsenshi. His return to Akita Shoten for the Iron Wok Jan sequel marked a reunion with the publisher where he achieved his greatest success.
In December 2025, it was announced that Iron Wok Jan would receive a television anime adaptation, scheduled to premiere in 2026. The anime is directed by Ei Aoki at studio TROYCA. This adaptation represents the first animated treatment of Saijyo's signature work.
