Daiju Yanauchi

Description
Daiju Yanauchi, whose name in Japanese is written as 柳内大樹, is a manga artist and writer known for creating action-oriented series that often center on delinquent youth and countercultural themes like tattooing. His career as an original creator began in the early 2000s, with one of his first credited works being the manga Gaki Rock in 2002, for which he handled both the story and the artwork. This series is noted as an example of his early work as an original creator in the anime and manga industry.

Yanauchi is best known for his long-running series Gang King, which began serialization in 2005. For this title, he again took on the dual role of writer and illustrator, a common practice for manga creators in the industry. The story follows a sixteen-year-old delinquent named Jimmy, nicknamed Tattoo Jimmy, who dreams of traveling to the United States to become a master tattoo artist. The series is defined by its focus on street brawls, school conflicts, and the cultural significance of tattoos, which are portrayed as a mark of a hero. The manga was published in Japan and saw a French release by Taïfu Comics, where seventeen volumes were released as of early 2012. In January 2023, Kodansa USA announced a new digital license for Gang King, bringing the series to English-speaking audiences and describing it as a tattoo art-focused battle manga.

Beyond his most famous work, Yanauchi has created several other manga series. He wrote and drew Dreamking in 2005, followed by a sequel titled Dream King R in 2007. A side story to this series, Dreamking Gaiden - Shibuya Mandala, was released in 2012. Another notable work is Gunkan Shōnen, which he also both wrote and illustrated, with releases in 2012 and again in 2021. More recent original works from Yanauchi include One For All in 2023 and Batsu in 2025, continuing his active role as a storyteller and artist in the manga industry.

A recurring identity in Yanauchi's work is his focus on juvenile delinquency, physical combat, and personal codes of honor. Series like Gaki Rock and Gang King are grounded in the world of rebellious youth and street-level conflicts, while the incorporation of tattooing as a central plot device and symbol of power gives his work a distinctive visual and thematic identity. His artistic identity is therefore closely tied to the tropes of the fighting manga genre, with a particular emphasis on body modification as a marker of status and strength. Yanauchi's significance in the industry lies in his consistent production of original content over two decades, maintaining creative control as both writer and artist on his major projects. The international licensing of Gang King for digital release in 2023 demonstrates his work's enduring appeal and its ability to reach new audiences beyond its original publication.
