Jiro Ando
Description
Jiro Ando, also known as Jirō Andō, is a Japanese manga artist and illustrator born in Tokyo, Japan. He is recognized as a disciple of the acclaimed manga creator Jirō Taniguchi, under whom he studied. Ando made his professional debut in 1997 using the pen name Jirō Aruma, which he used for works intended for an adult audience.
Ando is best known as the illustrator of the manga series Shion no Ō, which was written by Masaru Katori. The series, a mystery and sports story centered on the game of shogi, was serialized in Kodansha's seinen manga magazine Monthly Afternoon from May 2004 to June 2008 and collected into eight bound volumes. The success of the manga led to a twenty-two episode anime television adaptation produced by Studio Deen, which aired in Japan from October 2007 to March 2008. A video game for the Nintendo DS based on the series was also released in April 2008.
Beyond Shion no Ō, Ando created the manga version of Bushido Sixteen, a story centered on kendo, which was also published in Monthly Afternoon. His known interests include collecting Western comics, reading manga, and watching films, and he has been noted to occasionally reference film titles in his own work.
