Aki Shimizu

Description
Aki Shimizu is a Japanese manga artist and writer recognized for her intricate artwork and long-term engagement with supernatural mystery narratives, particularly those originating from the literary works of Natsuhiko Kyogoku. Hailing from Omuta in Fukuoka Prefecture, Shimizu began her professional career in the mid-1990s as an illustrator and character designer. Her early work included contributions to magazines and character designs for video games such as After Devil Force in 1998 and First Queen: The New World in 1999.

Shimizu’s entry into manga saw her initially providing art for series written by others. Around 2000, she worked on Yato no Kamitsukai, also known as Blood Sucker: Legend of Zipangu, a horror fantasy series with a historical Japanese setting. Around the same time, she provided the artwork for Kumo no Graduale (Graduale der Wolken). In 2002, she began taking on the role of both writer and artist, starting with the manga adaptation of the Konami video game Suikoden III, titled Gensou Suikoden III: Unmei no Keishousha, which ran for eleven volumes. That same year, she also launched her original series Qwan, a fantasy story set in ancient China about a boy who consumes demons to gain power, which concluded in 2007.

A significant portion of Shimizu’s career has been dedicated to adapting the works of author Natsuhiko Kyogoku. Starting in 2007, she began illustrating manga versions of his acclaimed Hyakki Yagyo (also known as the Kyogokudo) series, a collection of supernatural mystery novels. Her adaptations from this universe include Mouryou no Hako, Kyoukotsu no Yume, Ubume no Natsu, Jorougumo no Kotowari, and Tesso no Ori. These works established her as a key artistic interpreter of Kyogoku’s complex, folklore-infused mysteries.

Her ongoing manga, The Mononoke Lecture Logs of Chuzenji-sensei: He Just Solves All the Mysteries, is a continuation of this collaboration. The series is a prequel spin-off focusing on a younger version of a character from Kyogoku’s novels. Shimizu serves as both the writer and artist for this manga, which began serialization in Kodansha’s Shonen Magazine Edge in October 2019. After the magazine ceased publication, the series was transferred to Kodansha’s Comic Days digital platform in December 2023. The series was subsequently adapted into an anime television series, which aired from April to June 2025. Produced by 100studio and directed by Chihiro Kumano, the anime represents a significant adaptation of Shimizu’s work.

Throughout her bibliography, Shimizu’s artistic identity is closely tied to supernatural and mystery genres, often incorporating elements of Japanese folklore. Her work on the Kyogoku adaptations, in particular, demonstrates a sustained focus on atmospheric, psychologically complex storytelling. Beyond her adaptation work, she has created original one-shot and short series such as NEET Onna to Shougaku Ninensei, a collection of short stories exploring social themes and personal connections, and Tortoise Delivery, a science fiction action series. She has also contributed to horror anthologies and returned to the Suikoden video game franchise with an adaptation of Suikoden Star Leap. Her consistent output across decades, particularly her deep involvement in translating acclaimed novels into manga, has solidified her reputation within the industry as a creator adept at blending literary mystery with detailed visual storytelling.
