Julietta Suzuki

Description
Julietta Suzuki is a Japanese manga artist known for creating fantasy and supernatural romance series, most notably Kamisama Kiss. Born on December 6, 1980, in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan, her pen name was inspired by the character Julietta Sakamoto from the seinen manga series Air Master. She began drawing at a young age, starting in a sketchbook during her second year of elementary school.

Suzuki made her professional debut in 2004 with the one-shot Ura Antique, submitted to Hakusensha's 44th Big Challenge, which was later published in Hana to Yume magazine. Her second one-shot, Asa ga Kuru, won the Great Effort Award at the 338th Hana to Yume Mangaka Course. Throughout 2004 and 2005, she produced numerous one-shots including Hoshi ni Naru Hi, My Precious, and My Bloody Life before launching her first serialized series.

Her first series, Akuma to Dolce (The Devil and Sweets), began serialization in Hana to Yume in June 2005. Shortly after, she started Karakuri Odette, a series about an android girl attending high school to learn about humanity, which ran until January 2008 and was compiled into six volumes. Karakuri Odette received the Outstanding Debut award at the 31st Hakusensha Athena Newcomers' Awards.

Suzuki achieved widespread recognition with Kamisama Kiss (Kamisama Hajimemashita), which serialized in Hana to Yume from February 20, 2008, to May 20, 2016. The series was collected into 25 tankobon volumes and licensed for English release in North America by Viz Media under its Shojo Beat imprint. The manga was adapted into two seasons of an anime television series, commonly referred to as Kamisama Kiss and Kamisama Kiss 2. Following the conclusion of Kamisama Kiss, Suzuki continued creating new series including Tripitaka Torinique in 2016, the romantic comedy ninja manga Ninkoi in 2018, Meitantei Kōko wa Yūutsu in 2020, and the vampire romantic comedy Otaku Vampire's Love Bite in 2022.

Suzuki's work consistently explores themes of humanity, emotion, and identity. In an interview, she stated that having emotions and wanting to express desire the way one wants is what makes someone human. Her series Karakuri Odette examines this through an android protagonist seeking to understand human nature, while Kamisama Kiss incorporates Shinto mythology and Japanese spiritual traditions. She has expressed a preference for fantasy over science fiction, noting that fantasy contains more mysteries and that the emotional, human-like qualities of kami in Shinto stories make them easier to portray in manga. She also mentioned that she finds male characters easier to draw in general.

Her artistic style is described as round and dynamic, blending romance with fantastical elements. She has cited Junji Ito as an author she enjoys, despite not reading extensively. In her personal life, she likes cats, koalas, and sharks, and enjoys having movies play in the background while working on her manga. Suzuki holds significance in the manga industry as a successful shoujo creator whose works have achieved international appeal and anime adaptations, demonstrating how stories rooted in specific Japanese cultural elements can resonate with global audiences.
