Description
Shiki Mizuchi is a Japanese novelist and light novel author originally from Hikone City in Shiga Prefecture, Japan. He has also written under the former pen name Kinouta Ei (木ノ歌詠). Before achieving mainstream success, Mizuchi earned recognition through several literary awards, including an honorable mention in the 4th Fujimi Young Mystery Grand Prize, the Grand Prize in the 1st New Young Jump Original Grand Prize, and a special award in the 5th Tokuma Novels Edge Newcomer Prize.
Mizuchi is best known as the author of the light novel series Dragonar Academy (Japanese title: Seikoku no Dragonar or Seikoku no Ryuukishi), which served as the foundation for a multi-media franchise. The series was published by Media Factory under the MF Bunko J imprint, with illustrations provided by Kohada Shimesaba. The first light novel volume was released on June 25, 2010, and the series concluded on November 25, 2015, spanning a total of twenty volumes. The story is set in the continent of Arc Strada, where dragon breeders called Breeders bond with dragon partners known as Pars, and follows a problem student named Ash Blake whose dragon unexpectedly manifests in the form of a human girl named Eco.
The commercial success of the light novels led to a manga adaptation of Dragonar Academy, which began serialization in Monthly Comic Alive magazine starting with the June 2011 issue. The manga was illustrated by Ran and concluded on December 23, 2016, comprising thirteen volumes. The English-language version of the manga was published by Seven Seas Entertainment.
The property was further adapted into an anime television series, which was announced at Media Factory's Summer School Festival event on July 28, 2013. The anime aired in Japan from April 5, 2014, to June 21, 2014, for a total of twelve episodes. The production was directed by Shunsuke Tada and Tomoyuki Kurokawa, with series composition by Noboru Kimura and animation by studio C-Station. Funimation licensed the series for North American distribution.
Beyond his work on Dragonar Academy, Mizuchi has written numerous other novels across several imprints. These titles include publications with Fujimi Mystery Bunko, Tokuma Novels Edge, Shogakukan's Gagaga Bunko, Ichijinsha Bunko, Hayakawa Bunko, and GA Bunko.
