Torajirou Kishi
Description
Torajirou Kishi is a Japanese manga artist and original creator, born in 1973 in Kanagawa Prefecture. He is a graduate of Gakushuin University. Kishi made his professional debut as a manga author in 1997 with the series Colorful, which was serialized in Shueisha's Weekly Young Jump magazine. The series ran until 2000 and was compiled into seven collected volumes. Colorful is noted for its unconventional production, as it was drawn entirely in color, a rarity for Japanese manga at the time of its release.
The series is a sex comedy composed of short, fast-paced vignettes centered on the futile attempts of male characters to glimpse under women's skirts or down their blouses. Its tone is manic and parodic. Colorful was adapted into a sixteen-episode anime television series that aired in 1999. The anime was directed by Ryutaro Nakamura, produced by the studio Triangle Staff, and each episode had a runtime of approximately seven minutes. This adaptation brought Kishi's original comedic concepts to a wider audience in Japan and, later, in North America.
Beyond Colorful, Kishi has created several other manga series. These include Bloody Mary, a science fiction story published in the early 2000s, and Maka-Maka, a yuri-themed work. He also authored Speed Master, a manga about car tuning which was adapted into a live-action film in Japan. In a notable international collaboration, Kishi worked with the animation studio Madhouse to create Devil, a manga published by Dark Horse Comics. This series was described as a science fiction police drama featuring genetically designed vampires set in Tokyo. His body of work demonstrates a recurring interest in adult-oriented comedy, science fiction, and genre-blending narratives.
