Kimama Aoboshi

Description
Kimama Aoboshi is the creator of the manga series Kinokoinu: Mushroom Pup, which began serialization in Tokuma Shoten's seinen manga magazine Monthly Comic Ryū on July 17, 2010, and concluded on February 28, 2022. The series was Aoboshi's first published work and was collected into fifteen tankōbon volumes released from October 13, 2011, to May 13, 2022. The manga is licensed for an English-language release in North America by Digital Manga Publishing, which published the first two volumes.

The story of Kinokoinu: Mushroom Pup centers on Hotaru Yuyami, a picture book author struggling with grief following the death of his beloved dog, Hanako. His life changes when a strange pink mushroom with spots appears in his garden and transforms into a dog-like creature. This creature, named Kinokoinu, possesses a determined personality and helps Hotaru begin to process his loss and return to creative work. The narrative follows Hotaru, his concerned editor Komako Amano, and an eccentric mushroom researcher named Itsuki Yara as they share humorous and heartwarming experiences with the unusual companion.

The series is characterized by its blend of gentle comedy and emotional depth, using the fantastic premise of a mushroom that becomes a dog to explore themes of friendship, healing from grief, and the bond between humans and animals. Aoboshi's artistic style in the manga is noted as attractive and straightforward, with the story told largely through images and minimal dialogue, while giving the small protagonist a surprisingly strong-willed and sometimes fierce personality.

An anime television series adaptation of Kinokoinu: Mushroom Pup was announced in May 2024. Produced by the studio C-Station and directed by Kagetoshi Asano, the anime aired twelve episodes from October 3 to December 19, 2024. The series featured a cast including Daiki Kobayashi as the voice of Kinokoinu and Yuto Uemura as Hotaru Yuyami. The opening theme song was performed by the band HY, and Crunchyroll streamed the series internationally.

Beyond Kinokoinu: Mushroom Pup, Aoboshi launched another manga series titled Jouzu ni Ikaremashita, also known as Life with Flowers, which began serialization in 2022 in the josei magazine For Mrs., published by Akita Shoten.
